After the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96, her eldest son, King Charles III, took over the throne.

Earlier this year, the Queen celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, or seventy years of reign. He is the longest serving in the history of the British monarchy.

However, with the death of the Queen, the former Prince of Wales Charles, who is now known as King Charles III, ascended the throne.

How does a king get power?

The line of succession determines which member of the royal family will take over as king after the death or abdication of the king or queen.

For example, Queen Elizabeth’s first child Charles became King after his mother’s death and his wife Camilla became Queen Consort.

The royal family’s rules of succession were revised in 2013 to ensure that sons do not usurp their older sisters.

Meanwhile, King Charles’s legacy rests with his eldest son, Prince William. who inherited his father’s title of Duke of Cornwall. But he will not automatically become the Prince of Wales. He will get it only if the king grants him.

Prince William’s eldest child Prince George is second in line to the throne and his daughter Princess Charlotte is third.

Who else is in the royal family?

>> The Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge (Prince William) is the first child of King Charles and his first wife Diana, Princess of Wales. His wife is The Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge (Catherine). They have three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

>> The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) was the Queen’s second child and only daughter. She is married to Vice Admiral Timothy Lawrence. She has two children with her first husband Captain Mark Phillips – Peter Phillips and Zara Tyndall.

>> The Earl of Wessex (Prince Edward) is the Queen’s youngest child. He is married to the Countess of Wessex (Sophie Rhys-Jones). They have two children – Louis and James Mountbatten Windsor.

>> The Duke of York (Prince Andrew) is the Queen’s second child. He also has two daughters with ex-wife The Duchess of York (Sarah Ferguson) – Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Prince Andrew stepped down from royal duties in 2019 after a controversial interview with Virginia Giffrey alleging he sexually assaulted her. After Ms. Ziff sued in a US court in February 2022, she paid the settlement. But how much he gave was not revealed.
